SIKKIM : GENERAL INFORMATION 

SIKKIM, a small Himalayan State lying between 27 to 28 degrees North latitude and 88 to 89 degrees East longitude is the second smallest state in India. It is barely 7,096 sq. kms in size yet has an elevation ranging from 300 mtrs. to 8585 mtrs. above sea level. It's Geography is dominated by the most majestic mountain chain in the world which includes the Khangchenjunga, world's third highest mountain and is worshipped by the Sikkimese as the guardian deity to their land.   

AREA : Sikkim is situated 7096 sq. kms. in the Eastern Himalayas, bordering the Tibet autonomous region to it's North, Tibet and Western Bhutan to it's East, Eastern Nepal to it's West and the Darjeeling Gorkha Hills of West Bengal to it's South.

How to get to Sikkim?


     Air:

Nearest airport is Bagdogra in West Bengal 125 kms approx and Biratnagar and Bhadrapur in Nepal, which is 146 kms approx from Gangtok. Sikkim helicopter service also does daily passenger service from Bagdogra – Gangtok- Bagdogra.

 

 

     Rail:

The nearest railway stations are Siliguri (115 kms) and New Jalpaiguri 120 kms approx.

 

 

     Road:

Gangtok is well connected by road with Siliguri, Darjeeling, Kalimpong and other important cities in India. It is also well connected to neighboring countries Bhutan and Nepal. The roads are very well maintained.

Entry Formalities

 

All foreign tourists intending to visit Sikkim must hold valid Indian visa and Inner Line Permit (ILP). ILP can also be obtained from all Indian missions, Sikkim Tourism Office (New Delhi), Sikkim Tourism Office (Calcutta), Sikkim Tourism Office (Siliguri), Darjeeling and Rangpo. The 15 days duration permit is issued on the spot without any delay provided photo copies of passport and visa details along with two passport photos of the applicants are made available then and there. Extension stay in the state can be made at Gangtok.

For those interested in going for trekking in the interior regions of the State, the department of Tourism issues Protected Area Permit (PAP) at Gangtok which is available for certain specified areas for groups consisting of 4(four) or more foreigners subject to the conditions that the trekking programme is arranged through a Registered Travel Agency.
